Keynote Talk

“Tsel Ts’éqw! Hailed by Tree and Forest”
Dr. Dylan Robinson (University of British Columbia)

Abstract: Althusser’s infamous scene of interpellation features a police officer hailing (shouting? yelling? stern-toned enunciating?): “Hey you there!” In turning toward this call, Althusser claims, we are constituted as subjects. Yet subjectivity is not constituted alone through singular address. We are called and re-called; we refuse the call (“stop calling stop calling…”) and are whispered to by ideology through the everyday, by the minute, by the near- and far-perceptible. This presentation considers art in public spaces and how such work seeks to hail members of the public through inter-sensory address. More specifically, I consider the large number of public artworks in Vancouver that use tree forms, and ask how these works play a significant role in the formation of settler subjectivity and Indigenous resurgence.
